Announcement versus Invitation

Both genres have some similarities, i.e., they can be written in the 1st person (even 1st person plural - “we invite you/we ask you to”) and address the readers.

To differentiate between them, consider the following criteria:

  • subjectivity, promotional features (subjective adjectives, exclamation marks) –> Invitation

  • verb “invite” –> Invitation; verb “announce, inform, ask, urge” (Slovene: obveščamo, pozivamo, naprošamo) –> Announcement

  • Invitation promotes an event, persuades the reader to join the event, while Announcement informs about a change of circumstances and asks the reader to act accordingly (see the examples below).
